Professional Development

Artist Teacher Scheme

BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham City University

Rewarding both professionally and personally, our courses fit into the lives of busy working people. Based at the School of Art in the centre of Birmingham, students come from across the Midlands and beyond. We partner with Ikon and The New Art Gallery  Walsall to give you the professional development opportunities you need: time to think, reconnect with contemporary art-practice and re-energise your teaching. Our students continue with research at higher levels, are promoted within the world of art education, establish their own successful art practice or find their study enables them to take a sideways step into another art related career. We are interested in hearing from experienced or aspiring teachers, artists, learning curators and informal educators, in educational contexts from early years through to old age.

“The benefits of becoming part of a creative community outside the school challenged my thinking about my role as an artist and educator. I found the entire experience fulfilling personally and professionally. Becoming engaged in making my own art work again; thinking and contextualising my work as an artist has encouraged me to extend this into the classroom and challenge my students to do the same.”
