Where Have All The Boys Gone? is a highly successful and hugely popular course, which is returning 14 June.

In recent years the underachievement of boys in art, craft and design has become an issue of concern. At GCSE and National 5 level more than twice as many girls as boys choose to continue to study our subject. The attainment gap between genders for A-C/9-4 grades is now very significant: In 2017, for GCSE, the percentage of girls achieving an A* more than doubled the percentage of boys achieving the same grade. At National 5, 29% of boys achieved an 'A' compared to 46% of girls.

Although there is little subject-specific research, there is evidence in Ofsted reports, and in anecdotal evidence, that schools can address the gender divide with targeted interventions relating to curriculum design, content and teaching styles. These interventions will benefit and support all your learners.

Where Have All The Boys Gone (WHATGB)? will help you understand the issues, and to address them by looking at the evidence. We will explore what is myth and reality, and discuss how you can develop more inclusive learning models across all phases to make the subject meaningful, relevant and engaging to contemporary learners. The course is suitable for all phases of education.

WHATBG will support you in developing realistic and achievable strategies in order to make changes, to identify your own CPD needs for this, to achieve the goal of getting boys back into art, craft and design, and to improving attainment in your classes.

Course facilitator: Susan Coles, a fellow and past President of NSEAD), has been running national courses on this topic for 15 years. Susan will be sharing a range of diverse case studies from teachers and schools she has worked with alongside her own experiences of developing courses which will benefit all your learners. #WHATBG artcrimes.org.uk
