The National Curriculum in England
In May 2010 the Coalition Government announced a review of the National Curriculum as part of its White Paper,
'The Importance of Teaching'.
The Society has responded to the consultation process for the review of the National Curriculum, and a final version was published
in September 2013. As it stands, throughout the consultation process, the Society and its members have been listened to, but not enough.
The final version is neither inspirational nor aspiration and certainly not 'world class'. The final version does not describe the unique
nature, depth, breadth and future of the subject, nor fully meet the needs of children and young people living and engaging in the 21st century.
The Society formed a Curriculum Writing Group to move the statutory National Curriculum for art and design forward,
and further support teachers in its interpretation.
During 2013 the Society was invited to join an Expert Group for art and design initiated by the DfE. The Society contributed to further
curriculum support materials to be found here.
