Provisional GCSE and equivalent results in England, 2016 to 2017, indicate numbers of students taking at least one arts subject has fallen

The DfE published report Provisional GCSE and equivalent results in England, 2016 to 2017, indicates the percentage of pupils in state-funded schools entering at least one arts subject decreased in 2017, by 1.6 percentage points, to 46.4%. (p.20, 12 October 2017).

Previous reports, cited by the DfE in the last two years, have shown that numbers of students taking one arts subject have increased. This, as the Creative Industries Federation observe: 'Has previously allowed the government to mask falling numbers overall.'

The Society, along with partner associations, will continue to advocate for a change in government policies which are now so evidently impacting on the career and life chances of young people.
