Perhaps as others suggest he is in too much of a hurry to check facts - or perhaps is simply more interested in sound bites. For example, he claims the 'last Government explicitly removed the requirement to award a set number of marks for correct spelling, punctuation and grammar in examinations' when Labour actually introduced just that for all qualifications.

Perhaps Mr Gove needs to take sometime to consult more with those who actually know what they are talking about?

Ged, we have a feminised art curriculum with a predominant menu of Fine Art and Drawing and Painting which turns some boys off. We do need more male art teachers. Schools that buck the trend and successfully close the boy/girl gap have a wider curriculum and, as you mention, include more new technologies and opportunities. The last OFSTED for Art in March 2009 highlighted so much but the trend of boys not choosing Art at GCSE is still quite an issue.

At grade C (alone) it has improved slightly (but close to negligible 0.2). There is an improvement for boys at grade A, but the mean/average improvement (A* - B) is better for girls. Using the Non-cumulative results there is a bigger overall range between boys and girls A*- C achievement this year than last. I'd like to do more number crunching to be sure.

I'm confused about which levels have currency at the moment. I had thought the new levels developed in 2007 as part of the new secondary curriculum and based upon the four 'key concepts' had been abandoned in favour of the previous levels set out in 2003. These were based upon three aspects to be assessed. But when I look at the QCDA website today it is the 2007 levels which are given as the ones to be used. So I am not sure which levels have actually been abandoned I don't recall a new set that was developed after 2007 - but perhaps I missed that.

Just received this Diploma Summary about Diplomas by email from DfE. It seems to significantly reduce the scope and networking of Diploma delivery. This may make it easier to deliver but I would regret the loss of professional partnerships which have been a key feature of some Diplomas. It would be a shame if they reverted to the state of other 'vocational' courses which have been severely hindered by the lack of industrial/vocational expertise and experience in schools. Perhaps Business and Enterprise Colleges have resolved this however (post Dip irony). I cannot find this summary online and the easiest place to park it is in Bucks Grid for Learning so follow the page down to 'The New Secondary Curriculum' section in the link.

Sorry John I had not noticed you had already posted this. But these materials do in fact contain within them much of the principles and practice of APP developed within the programme. They unpack assessment into the three focuses, they reflect good assessment practice looking at particular aspects of performance for evaluation rather than leaping to holistic judgement. The formal APP references that had been built into, or rather underneath, these materials, but not yet activated are in fact relatively slight changes to the website, some labels and a guidelines paper which is probably not a million miles away from the assessment working paper that you already have.

They are published as examples of levels and assessment but without the explicit APP references that were developed at the time. I am given to understand that the government has not made a decision about the APP materials yet. However, it should be possible to extract examples of good assessment practice whether you call it APP or not. The materials do present criteria under the 3 headings developed for APP which are in fact very close to the older level descriptions that schools currently have to ...(more online)

I guess one of the issues may be that with a potential withdrawal of national guidance for KS3 (an entitlement for all) what may come to define KS3 by default could become the KS4 examination syllabus designed for some older students following a specialist course. But withdrawal of much external monitoring will put even more pressure to deliver examination results. Unintended outcome - will/should iGCSE influence KS3? Incidentally latest rumours from sources close to govt suggest department is considering 3 options for SIPS. No SIPs, SIPs for underperforming schools, delegate monitoring to LA's. No fourth option to sustain and fund a national system of SIPs for all. And I would now be surprised if levels in core subjects survive .

In summary we now have two different sets attainment targets running now in tandem: The 'Secondary Curriculum Handbook' as noted by DfE ministers uses the 2007 revised set and the Primary Levels recorded on the Curriculum website uses the earlier version. Primary teachers have listed the full range of old Attainment Targets (Level 1 - EP) whilst the Secondary Curriculum Handbook (also on the Curriculum website/KS3 -4)) notably uses the new levels from Level 4 upwards. Any student at KS3 who is below Level 4, must therefore be assessed using the primary levels.

Would this suit learners who respond better in final exams or as the CIE examiners report suggests - has the reliance on one final exam resulted in less depth and exploration?&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#160; Investigations to be continued ...

A big element of this is the iGCSE - what do you think about this art and design iGCSE - increasing choice and opportunity? More appropriate/problematic? &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#160; If you want to know more visit....http://www.cie.org.uk/qualifications/academic/middlesec/igcse/subject?assdef_id=836 Rob

I don't know if anyone else has noticed that on 9 June Ofsted published new guidance for use on subject survey visits. This is a consultation to be completed by 31 July. This draft guidance contains criteria and level descriptions for judgements made about subject achievement, curriculum, leadership etc. It should be useful for reviewing the template and criteria for departmental reviews whether done internally or externally. Made a note in my blog. I guess it would be best to wait until October, when the final version will be published, before working it up- perhaps to replace the last departmental review framework A4 developed with Ian M.

It might be interesting to visit Stowe School. The school is in the process of building a new art centre whiuch should be very interesting and I suspect it will be quite significant. Funding is from Lord Sainsbury who is an old boy of the school. The architect is Rick Mather who has just completed the Ashmolean conversion in Oxford. The original building has some Bauhaus merit and the new building is stripping it back to reveal this. The head of art is Brian Johnson. I am not sure when it will be opening but work is well underway. Hope this is helpful.

Two history teachers report in the Guardian (Thursday 17 June) http://bit.ly/bjeahWthat Niall Ferguson had asked just one teacher about the history curriculum and used a slide of the old curriculum at the Hay Festival! They spoke to Ferguson immediately after the talk and noted Ferguson's elementary error - he had not checked his sources. They suggest that if he had consulted the QCDA website before giving his lecture, he might have found that the new curriculum is not broken and it does not need fixing.

I suspect that any new 'freedoms' for teachers will be mediated in practice by the 'rigorous' monitoring of performance. Twas ever thus - it will be the mechanisms of monitoring teaching, learning and standards that will play just as big a role in the next phase as it did in the last. It will be interesting to see who is doing the measuring, what instruments they will use and how they report the results.

I agree with Johns response but would also add ... Yes - young peoples performance will vary according to the challenges, materials and processes put in front of them. &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#160;There is ample confirmation that performance varies in relation to the media they are exploring - after all we know boys will do well when encouraged to work in 3D, and so conversely we know performance may well be lower when working with other materials. Learning is a journey for all of us, and sometimes we make steps in the right direction and sometimes it feels like we're walking backwards. &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#160;This ...(more online)

We must also not loose sight of the process involved here ... there is something about engaging with such materials for yourself - whether as an adult or as a child - and taking ownership through that process. You then end up with language that means something to you individually rather than just 'simple' language. I'm not always convinced about 'off the shelf solutions' - but if this perhaps models the concept of taking ownership - and the fact that you do have license to do this and that personal solutions are valid then good?
Hi Kerry,Thanks for the message. I know that many teachers are really grafeful for 'pupil friendly' criteria and I would be really interested in what you have done. Is it something that could be accessed over the3 internet - ie on an open section of the Tallis website? We could then share the link.Best Dan

In Bucks we are going ahead with planned meetings for heads and in developing ideas to support schools to deliver the additional training day that has been agreed. We think that even though the new primary curriculum is unlikely to become law it is still a worthwhile reference for any school looking to review its curriculum. However, before Easter I heard Estelle Morris say that whoever won the election there would be a new Education White Paper before August. I guess that even though the direction of travel is to allow schools autonomy over their curriculum (with Rose as one option), it would be hard to pursue it if there is a pending White Paper. I suspect we would advise caution to schools opting to hold their training day early in the autumn term.

I am an Art &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; Design PGCE student doing research for an essay on assessment, and I wondered if anybody could offer some views.
That could be difficult. The failure to roll out APP might seem appropriate to some in art education who do not want to be 'tied' by more specific criteria or assessment statements, fearing it may limit creativity.&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#160; Perfectly understandable However, if some subjects do not get APP, SLTs will continue to press ahead with school based procedures that demand teachers use detailed statements, meaning foundation subject teachers may feel under some pressure to invent something similar.
