When new art and design accommodation is being planned or when reviewing provision to make improvements, it is sensible to seek specialised advice on the size, layout and specification of studios/teaching rooms, storage spaces, heating, lighting, furniture and equipment. This was historically provided by school design teams from the relevant local authority, or their specialist advisers. At the time of writing, such specialists are no longer available and local authorities may not have staff able to provide such specialist guidance. Independent and Trust schools work with architecture companies of choice and CE schools will seek advice through their Diocesan architects.
