In a properly organised and well-designed darkroom there should be few hazards. The greatest dangers arise from the proximity of electricity to water, lack of adequate ventilation and handling chemicals. ( see services for more information.). Safety during extended curriculum and 'out of hours' activities will need to be considered to ensure safety and security of pupils and adult users in the event of an accident, emergency or late exits from the building. A darkroom door lock should always be able to be opened from the inside. A small darkroom or small pupil groups can present safeguarding issues. Hence, teachers should not work in darkrooms with a group of fewer than 4 pupils.
