Employers are required under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999 amended in 2006) to undertake an assessment of risks in the work place. In schools, this function may be delegated to the headteacher, but is usually expected of the head of department, who will lead their teaching teams to 'risk assess' any activity with a potential for some risk to pupil safety.
