Linking pattern to textile work

A useful introduction for young children to pattern can be found in many children's story books. For example, read 'Mum and Dad Make me Laugh' a children's story book about the clothes people wear. Discuss the story and make visual record on a large sheet of paper about the different sized shapes, patterns and colours mentioned in the story. Can the children add other ideas about types of patterns? For example: small dots, spots and large circles, thin and thick lines, straight, wavy, zig zag, vertical and diagonal lines.

Make a collection of fabric samples (swatches), discuss how the designers have made used repeating colours, shapes and motifs of different kinds to make up the patterns? Talk about how the patterns could be sorted or grouped, by colours, shapes, stripes, spots, flowers. Which patterns do the children prefer? How do the patterns make them feel? Do bright patterns cheer people and amuse them, talk about clowns and why they wear bright colourful patterns? Which type of patterns would they choose if they were going to make a fabric design for a tea-shirt or skirt?
