Making a triptych
The inspiration for this project could come from a discussion of medieval and Renaissance triptychs. Ask the pupils why the side panels were closed up hiding the images. Why and when were the panels opened? The sense of occasion, significance and mystery will be a motivating factor in the work.
Discuss how to make the structure for the triptych. This could be quite a simple affair with hinged card or a more elaborate wooden framed structure with hinges. The shape of the panels is also an issue. Some medieval and Renaissance triptychs have arched panels.
